Kavaja is a town located in western Albania, about 17 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Tirana. It is known for its beautiful beaches, historical landmarks, and cultural heritage.
If you are planning to visit Kavajë, here are some of the top things to see and do:
- Visit the Kavajë Castle: The Kavajë Castle is a historical landmark that dates back to the 4th century BC. It was built by the Illyrians and later used by the Byzantines, the Venetians, and the Ottomans. Today, the castle is in ruins, but it still offers beautiful views of the surrounding area.
- Relax on the Beaches: Kavajë is known for its beautiful beaches. Some of the most popular beaches in the area include Shëngjin Beach, Rana e Hedhun Beach, and Lalëzi Bay Beach. These beaches offer crystal-clear waters, white sand, and plenty of activities for visitors.
- Visit the Ethnographic Museum: The Ethnographic Museum of Kavajë showcases the traditional way of life of the Albanian people. It features exhibits of traditional costumes, tools, and artifacts from the past.
- Explore the Natural Parks: Kavajë is surrounded by beautiful natural parks that offer a variety of activities for visitors. The Divjaka-Karavasta National Park is the largest coastal park in Albania and is home to over 250 bird species.
- Visit the Bazaar: The Kavajë Bazaar is a great place to experience the local culture and sample traditional Albanian food. It offers a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and homemade products.
Overall, Kavajë is a beautiful destination that offers a mix of history, culture, and nature. It’s a great place to relax, explore, and learn about the rich Albanian heritage.
Karpen beach
One of the lesser-known beaches in Eagle Country, Karpen is the perfect destination for those who love quality and secluded places. Located in the town of Kavajë, Karpen offers a really comfortable and pleasant sandy beach. In addition, the clubs and restaurants in the area are a guarantee of high quality fish and wine. All characteristics that make Karpen beach the ideal destination for gourmets and lovers of tranquillity.
The Ethnographic Museum
The museum is one of the most characteristic buildings of Kavaja. Located in the “Skuraj” district, the museum was built between the 18th and 19th centuries by the Arkaxhij family and contains authentic values of the Albanian people such as popular costumes and historical objects, from the Illyrian period to the communist dictatorship passing through the early Middle Ages, the Renaissance and independence.
The clock tower
Built in the 19th century, the clock tower stands on the hilltop bazaar square overlooking the entire city. Inside the tower there is a wooden staircase while at the top there is a clock that previously worked accompanied by the sound of the bell. The tower is known for its architectural values and decoration created by white and green stones.
Turra Castle
Turra Castle was built in the Illyrian era and served as a protective fortress for the whole area. Among the various ruins of the area, there are also those of the towers that surrounded the gate at the time. During the communist era, a military unit was established near the castle. Turra Castle was declared a cultural monument in 1948.
The church of St. Paraskevi
Built between the 14th and 15th centuries, the church has great historical and artistic values inside (including the paintings and frescoes of the Zografi brothers and Kostandin Shpataraku). Initially Catholic, St. Paraskevi’s Church was later converted to Orthodox. It has been a cultural monument since 1963.
Bashtovë Castle
The fortress, in fact, does not fall within the city-museum of the area, it is not located along the Adriatic coast and, consequently, it is still almost unknown to foreign and non-foreign tourists, who – attracted by the more famous destinations – do not know its existence.
If we also add the fact that the information regarding the castle is minimal, it appears that the fortress of Bashtovë is in all respects one of the hidden treasures of Albania.
