Muradie Mosque
The building, completed in 1542, is one of the most beautiful Albanian constructions ever, perhaps the most beautiful and at the same time the oldest of the Ottoman era, especially as regards the fine workmanship of the external structure. Xhamia e Muradies (the Muradie Mosque)
It is the transformation into a mosque of a Byzantine church, probably dating back to the 12th century, by the architect Sinan (or of his prestigious school), one of the greatest Ottoman architects of all time. The original urban project, no longer recognizable today because it was too remodeled, envisaged a curved road with the mosque in front of it, in a sort of reproduction of the symbol of the crescent moon with the star; the building is located in the central part of Vlora, on the central avenue, near the Flag Square.
Unlike other mosques in the country, even larger or more modern, such as those in Tirana, Scutari and Durres, where there is a greater turnout of Muslims praying and access for a visit can be difficult, the mosque of Vlora it can be easily visited by anyone. The rules are also a little less strict, even on the matter of taking off your shoes. Often even those who don’t take them off can visit the mosque, in line with the city’s tradition of secular tolerance. In fact, more than a place of worship, the mosque really seems to have remained what it was during the regime, that is, an exquisitely museum building.
