Cave of the Lady in Brrar
On the mountain above the church of Saint Mary there is a cave called “Cave of the Lady”. This cave is over 8 m deep and as high and wide and was used as a prehistoric settlement.
It is thought that at the time when the church was open, this place was used for “secret” works of the time, such as the melting or cutting of gold or silver coins.
This cave is located on the mountain of Brrar village, along the old road of Dibra, otherwise known as Arbrit road. It is a small cave, about 15m deep, but its special feature is that it is a sacred place where rituals are performed. Inside it is filled with stalactites and stalagmites from which cold and drinkable water also springs. Every August 15, local residents go there to spend the night and drink from its spring. Small cattle are also sacrificed. Here, as you can see, we have a mixture of pagan rituals with Christian ones and they are also performed by residents of the Muslim faith. The church of St. Mary was built next to it, which today is almost completely destroyed. The church belongs to a very early era of the Christian faith in this area. To get there, follow the road from Tirana to the village of Brrar, but without going up to the village. it is thought that at the time when the church was open, this place was used for “secret” works of the time, such as the melting or cutting of gold or silver coins.
The cave is on a mountainside that looks like it was cut with a knife. You can get there only through a path, which is not easy to find. With the help of local residents, it can be found more easily. There are no directional signs and it is not recognized and not included in nature guide itineraries.
