The blue Eye
The blue Eye, an extraordinary natural wonder
The latter is among the most amazing beauties of the whole of Albania and is located about thirty minutes from the coastal city of Saranda on the road to Gjirokastër (Gjirokastër). Surely the surprise factor adds beauty to this little paradise; finding an area that resembles the tropics in Albania, in fact, is no small feat.
The landscape that leads to Syri i Kaltër is in itself a wonderful gift of nature: palm trees, wild ferns, tropical plants, oaks and sycamores, all in one area. A title of eighteen springs are distributed throughout the area, with the fresh water spring coming from the Gjere mountain (in Italian ‘largo’) that flows into the Blue Eye, creating a natural pool with a depth of about 50 meters.
The depth of Syri i Kaltër has never been officially ascertained. Many divers have tried to go all the way in the past but never succeeded.
Why is it called the Blue Eye?
Looking at the center of this natural pool you will begin to understand the reason for the name: the deep blue waters of the center, in fact, form a sort of pupil of the eye, and are surrounded by emerald green and turquoise waters that are very reminiscent of the iris of the ‘eye. To complete the ocular anatomy there is the dense surrounding vegetation, which makes up the eyelashes.
The water maintains a temperature that is around a maximum of 10 degrees, only for the bravest who, during the summer, challenge the temperature by diving into the center of the eye.
The blue eye is an oasis of fresh air and climate, a tropical paradise that can rival any other in Venezuela or the Maldives. During the summer, it is an exceptional shelter from high temperatures. An incredible natural wonder that is just waiting to be visited.
How to reach the Blue Eye: 30 minutes by car from Saranda stopping at the village of Muzine near the Delvina-Gjirokaster national road. Or, alternatively, by bus, although there are no direct lines to the site.
