Lake Viroi
Lake Viroi, (Liqeni i Viroit) is a natural lake and water source, just 3 kilometers north of Gjirokastra. The water source supplies the lake with water all year round, but during hot summers the water levels can go down and in some rare occations, the lake has even almost dried up. The water of Lake Viroi is very calm and crystal clear and the surroundings are simply stunning. The area is a popular retreat for its beauty and the lake is also frequented by scuba divers. It has a surface of 17.5 ha but the depth is unknown, as there are several deep channels and according to legends, the lake is even connected to other lakes and caves, including The Blue Eye.
How To Get To Lake Viroi
Lake Viroi is located just 3 kilometers north from Gjirokastra, right next to the SH4 between Gjirokastra and Tepelena. This makes the lake easily accessible by bus as you can take any bus going north from Gjirokastra. There is also parking available if you go by car or decide to rent a car. There is also a pedestrian promenade from the city to the lake so you can also walk or bike there.
What To See And Do At Lake Viroi
Lake Viroi is ideal for walking or hiking as there are several walking paths around the lake and in the surrounding park. You’ll see green forrest on one side, and the Vjosa river on the other side. The water of the lake is crystal clear so you have a good view, which makes the lake also popular among divers. Underneath the water there are also a mysterious cave and several water sources supplying the lake with fresh water. Around the lake there are also a few restaurants for a bite or drink while enjoying the beautiful view at the lake.
