Apollonia
The ancient city of Apollonia, located approximately 12 km from Fier, was founded in 588 BC by the Greek colonies of Kelkyra (old Corfu) and Corinth near the delta of the Vjosa river, and the Dyrrah (l ‘actual Durazzo) were the main major cities and ports in Illyria. As a city-state from the 5th century BC it minted its own silver coin which, thanks to trade, spread throughout the Balkan peninsula. Soon, Apollonia was not only considered an important economic center but also a cultural one. Inside, the arts, sculpture and mosaics flourished. For its strategic position, Apollonia also became the center of harsh combat between Illyria, Macedonia and Rome. In 229 BC. the Roman occupation was beginning to take root and in 168 BC, the Romans assumed dominion over the entire city. For 200 years, Apollonia was an important center for Rome and a main stop on the famous Via Egnatia. It was also a fortress for Caesar during his war against Pompey the Great, and as reward for the support given to Caesar, it was granted the status of a free city.
